Welcome
Brian joined the Lee faculty in the fall of 2005 as an Instructor in Hebrew Bible. He received his B.A. from Lee College in 1996, his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2000, and is currently completing his Ph.D. at Emory University. His dissertation, “Arguing with Job: Consolation and Quarrel in the Joban Dialogue,” explores the place of agonistic and adversarial exchanges in interpersonal argument.
Prior to joining Lee, Brian served as an Adjunct Professor at Candler School of Theology at Emory University and at McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta. He has also served as a Chaplain Assistant at Trenton State Psychiatric Hospital in Trenton, NJ.
He has taught a wide range of courses, including Old Testament, New Testament, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Greek, God and War, Women and the Bible, Methods and Theories in Religious Studies, Wisdom Literature, The Pentateuch, and Wilderness Spirituality.
Since coming to Lee, Brian has participated in the Women’s Roundtable, the Poiema Retreat on Calling for students and faculty, and Lee’s Cultural Diversity Retreat. He also holds regular movie nights as “break-out sessions” for his introductory courses where students consider the interpretation of the Bible in film as well as films that explore and raise theological issues.
Brian is married to Monica Cooley Alderman who teaches music at Westside and North City Schools in Athens, TN. He is an active member at Northminster Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Chattanooga, TN, where he has served as liturgist, usher, preacher, teacher, and committee member.
