Dear Teacher,

The following standards are gathered from Common Core for English and Math and the Tennessee Curriculum standards for Science and Social Studies.   The ultimate goal of these units is to extend your curriculum and provide an interactive experience at our community’s Greenway Table garden.  Please utilize these ideas in any way that suits your classroom needs.  Feel free to contribute what works from your lesson plans to help improve this teacher resource.  We hope this helps you prepare students for an informative and fun garden experience!

 

TN Science Standards Covered:  Standard 8 – The Atmosphere

 Conceptual Strand 8

The earth is surrounded by an active atmosphere and an energy system that controls the distribution life, local weather, climate, and global temperature.

Guiding Question 8

How do the physical characteristics and the chemical makeup of the atmosphere influence surface processes and life on Earth?

Common Core Math Standards Covered:  Represent and interpret data.

1.MD.4. Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.

 


TN Social Studies Standards Covered:

1.3.02 Recognize how to identify and locate major physical and political features on

maps and globes.

a. Define what cardinal directions are.

b. Locate places using cardinal directions on maps and globes.

c. Locate cities, states, countries, and continents on maps and globes and major

bodies of water on maps and globes.

d. Describe the concept of human features as in cities, buildings, farms, roads, and

railroads.

e. Locate and name the places in school and the neighborhood.

f. Identify the geographic location of the United States and Tennessee on a globe

and a map.

g. Estimate distances such as from home to school.

 

Common Core Language Arts Standards Covered – Writing
