Grade 4 – Break it Down

Dear Teacher,

The following standards are gathered from Common Core for English and Math and the Tennessee Curriculum standards for Science and Social Studies.   The ultimate goal of these units is to extend your curriculum and provide an interactive experience at our community’s Greenway Table garden.  Please utilize these ideas in any way that suits your classroom needs.  Feel free to contribute what works from your lesson plans to help improve this teacher resource.  We hope this helps you prepare students for an informative and fun garden experience!

 

 

TN Science Standards Covered: Grade 4 Science Standard 3:Flow of Matter and Energy

 

Conceptual Strand 3

Matter and energy flow through the biosphere.

 Guiding Question 3

What scientific information explains how matter and energy flow through the biosphere?

Grade Level Expectations:

GLE 0407.3.1             Demonstrate that plants require light energy to grow and survive.

GLE 0407.3.2             Investigate different ways that organisms meet their energy needs.

Checks for Understanding

ü0407.3.1                   Create a food web that illustrates the energy relationships between plants and animals and the key issues or assumptions found in the model.

ü0407.3.2                   Classify organisms as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores.

ü0407.3.3                   Identify how a variety of organisms meet their energy needs.

State Performance Indicators

SPI 0407.3.1               Determine how different organisms function within an environment in terms of their location on an energy pyramid.

 

 Common Core Math Standards Covered:  Measurement and Data

4.MD.2. Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

 

 

TN Social Studies Standards Covered:  Grade 4 Social Studies Standard 3:  Geography

 • 4.3.spi.8. identify cause and effect relationships between population distribution and environmental issues (i.e., water supply, air quality, solid waste).

 

 

Common Core Language Arts Standards Covered – Writing
