Lee University Film Festival 2023

On April 21th, 2023, the annual Lee University Film Festival was held in the Dixon Center, where six student films were showcased. The Faculty Choice Award winner was Nine Months to November, and the Audience Choice Award went to Eyes Wide Open. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Lee’s student filmmakers!

Film Friendsy 2022

The Lee University Cinema department hosted its annual 48-hour Film Friendsy competition on the weekend of October 7th – 9th! Five teams wrote, filmed, and edited projects in two days, each required to incorporate an assigned genre, prop, and line of dialogue. The awards ceremony had over 100 people in attendance, and the films were all screened. The Best Frantic Filming award went to Stay With Me, and the Creative Under Pressure award was given to Machina: ’91

On April 8th, 2022, the annual Lee U Film Festival was held in the Conn Center, which showcased six student films. The Faculty Choice Award went to Heartbreak Magic, and Lakota Lake Inn received the Audience Choice Award. Senior Projects Filmed in September

September, 2021, saw three Senior projects produced over the course of three weekends. The films include Andrew Lundregan’s Cursed Skin, Victory Giet’s When I Needed You, and Merritt Jenkins’ Bus Stop. Check out some of the behind-the-scenes action from these productions here!

Film Friendsy 2021

The Film Friendsy Awards Ceremony had over 120 people in attendance and showcased six short films produced during the 48-Hour Film Competition. The six teams demonstrated incredible skill, creativity, and collaboration. Two awards were presented Monday night (September 27th): Eyes on the Prize received the C.U.P. (Creative Under Pressure) Award, and the B.F.F. (Best Frantic Filming) Award went to Going Gray. You can see all the Film Friendsy productions here! 1st AD Dave Venghaus Speaks to Students on Campus

On March 22nd, 2021, Lee University welcomed First Assistant Director Dave Venghaus to campus to speak to students. He provided a fascinating look into the world of big-budget filmmaking and gave students advice on how to build a successful career. Venghaus has worked as 1st AD for films such as The Lion King (2019), Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, A Quiet Place II, and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Centennial Documentary Link Is Up

In 1918, twelve students and one teacher met for the first day of the Church of God Bible Training School. After a century of miracles, highs and lows of all kinds, that school stands today as Lee University. This fascinating story is being told in a full length documentary that debuted at the Centennial Homecoming Celebration. Now, it can be seen for free on Lee’s Youtube page! Blu-Rays and DVDs can be purchased on the University’s store website.

Student and Faculty Films Receive Accolades at Festivals

Our department has received numerous awards this fall at various film festivals in the area! Sent Forth, our short film derived from the first ten minutes of our feature documentary, placed 1st in the Tennessee Narrative Category at the Knoxville Film Festival. Pebble, one of our student films that is about a homeless man having to make a tough choice, won the Best Tennessee Film at PUSH! Film Festival. Friend of a Friend, Professor Matthew FIsher’s latest film, won Best Writing at the Johnson City Film Festival. Along with these awards, the various films have been screened at other festivals and are set to screen all across the country. Keep an eye on our social media to see more updates!
