psychology?<\/b><\/em><\/div><ol><li><strong>It&#8217;s necessary.<\/strong>\u00a0 Graduate school is a must for students who want a career in psychology.\u00a0 Want to teach at a university or conduct research?\u00a0 Want to do marriage and family therapy?\u00a0 Want to work in the criminal justice system?\u00a0 Want to help streamline human resources practices in high-level businesses?\u00a0 You&#8217;re going to need a grad degree for all of those things.<\/li><li><strong><em>It&#8217;s competitive<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Countless psychology majors aspire to attend (and excel in) graduate school.\u00a0 Many of these students are excellent students, with high GPAs, strong GRE scores, and plenty of research and\/or teaching experience under their belts.\u00a0 If you want a seat at the table, you need to show the admissions committees that you are as good as or better than your competition.<\/li><li><strong><em>It&#8217;s difficult<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Graduate school isn&#8217;t undergrad 2.0.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t necessarily easy or always fun.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a challenge that weeds out those who aren&#8217;t dedicated self-starters with a sense of purpose and responsibility.\u00a0 Brace yourself, surround yourself with friends, and persevere.<\/li><li><strong><em>It&#8217;s worth it<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Trust me, it will be worth it in the end.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea44a75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ea44a75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What you need to have:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6148 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6148\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li><strong>A strong GPA.\u00a0<\/strong> The stronger the GPA, the better.\u00a0 Work hard in your classes; it will be worth it when those applications are due.<\/li><li><strong><em>A good GRE score<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 First, check to see if your schools of interests require the GRE.\u00a0 If not, move to the next item on the list.\u00a0 If so, well&#8230;start studying.\u00a0 Some schools won&#8217;t accept your application if your GRE score doesn&#8217;t meet their minimum or average score threshold.\u00a0 Find out what that score is, and then beat it.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re like me and perform terribly on standardized tests, then strengthen your application in other areas.<\/li><li><strong><em>A near-perfect fit<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 When trying to find the graduate school that&#8217;s right for you, look carefully for a program and mentor that fits your interest.\u00a0 If you apply to a school where the fit is less than ideal, you will probably be rejected (or miserable if you get accepted).<\/li><li><strong><em>Research experience<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Get involved in research <i>immediately<\/i>.\u00a0 Research experience will help your application stand out amongst the hundreds of forgettable ones.\u00a0 Also, regardless of whether you plan to go into experimental or clinical psychology, research is required in grad school, so get used to it now.<\/li><li><strong><em>Teaching experience<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Another way to stand out from the applicant crowd is to become a teaching assistant (TA) and\/or tutor.\u00a0 Want to know more?\u00a0 Contact Dr. Fisher for details.<\/li><li><strong><em>More research experience<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 I&#8217;m not kidding.\u00a0 This is important!<\/li><li><strong><em>Strong letters of recommendation<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Average or weak recommendation letters will break even the strongest application.\u00a0 Get to know 3-4 faculty members very well by conducting research with them, serving as their TA, or being attentive and inquisitive in class.\u00a0 Only ask faculty who you are sure will write you the strongest recommendations.<\/li><li><strong><em>Honors and awards<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you received a scholarship, academic achievement, or relevant award?\u00a0 Have you been a part of a research team who worked on a mini-grant?\u00a0 Are you a part of Psi Chi, the National Honors Society in Psychology?\u00a0 It would be advantageous if you could answer &#8220;yes&#8221; to at least one of these questions.<\/li><li><strong><em>A strong statement experience<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you think I&#8217;m lying, don&#8217;t you?\u00a0 Well, I&#8217;m not.<\/li><li><strong><em>Perseverance<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> Once you get in, let nothing stop you from walking across that stage with your new title and degree.\u00a0 Keep your head down and move forward&#8230;no matter what stands in your way.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re going to survive grad
