Deliberate\nPractice that Forms Good Habits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing productive practice habits is one of the most important goals of this studio.\u00a0 I strive to pass on not only what <\/em>to practice but how <\/em>to practice.\u00a0 In lessons, I will often model and ask you to repeat evidence-based practice methods.\u00a0 Your job is simply to engage with these practices on a daily basis throughout the week.\u00a0 You cannot simply ascent to being a better trumpet player!\u00a0 Our job is to practice deliberately in such a way that goodness becomes our habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persistent, Curious\nProblem Solving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some things I\nsuggest will not work immediately, but give them time.  And some concepts or practices will click for\nyou and others will not.  That\u2019s\nokay.  I enjoy problem solving alongside\nyou.  Seek out solutions from multiple\nangles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth-Mindset\nEnvironment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is essential\nthat we remain positive towards the future of our playing and those around us.  Together, we will seek to do away with condescending\ntalk about our own playing or that of others. \nI seek to use both specific critique in balance with honest praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balanced Musical\nDiet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trumpet playing\nrequires a variety of skills in order to develop and maintain the technical and\nmusical aspects of our playing. To that end, your practice should reflect this\nvariety. Don\u2019t stop doing the fundamentals when juries or another big\nperformance comes along.  And don\u2019t\nforget to make music every day! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not underestimate\nthe power of listening to great music and musicians, especially trumpet\nplayers.  You must engage in undistracted\nand repetitive listening of the repertoire you are studying, excellent trumpet\nplaying of all genres, and excellent musicians, no matter the instrument.  At no time in history has there been so many\nrecordings available to us instantly.  Be\nconnoisseurs of excellent recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performing\n& Recording<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As image\nbearers of God (Genesis 1:27) we have all been given supernatural creative gifts.  We are called to cultivate and share them\nwith others.   Therefore, we value\nopportunities to perform for others both in person and through recorded\nmediums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whole\nMusician<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are all\nmusicians who happen to play the trumpet. \nFor most of us, we will reach the highest heights of musical expression\non this instrument.  A fundamental goal\nis for you to become a better musician so that regardless of your musical\nexpression (playing, teaching, conducting, producing, etc.), you will have\ndeveloped those underlying musical skills. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whole Person<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The skills we\ngain through practicing and performing music can help us become better people.  This is done by developing good character\nthrough practice and noticing all of the ways that life is reflected in music\nmaking.  I will do my best to point these\nout along the way.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
