He received his Ph. D. and his Masters degree from Texas A&amp;M University and his Bachelors degree from Baylor University.? Prior to coming to Lee, Coats served as an assistant professor and associate professor at Quincy University in Illinois, where he won the Excellence in Teaching Award, directed the Honors Program, served as the Faculty Athletic Representative, and worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Coats teaches American history, with a special interest in United States foreign policy.? His research has focused on two areas:? late nineteenth century America and the foreign policy of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.? Coats? work includes ?Half Devil and Half Child:? America?s War with Terror in the Philippines, 1899-1902? and ?A Place for Faith in the Public Square??? ?He has presented papers at conferences, including the Society for the Historians of American Foreign Relations Meeting, the Conference on Illinois History, the Maryville Symposium on Faith and the Liberal Arts, the Inter-American Relations Conference and the Southwest Historical\/ Social Science Association Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Coats is married to Leigh Ann and they have two children, David and Rachel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. John Coats joined the Department of History and Political Science as an associate professor of History in Fall of 2006.
